As a professional tablet press manufacturer with over 40 years of industry experience, Shanghai Tablet Press Mechanical Components Co., Ltd. has always regarded precision as the lifeline of its equipment. In 2022, the company completed a major strategic technology upgrade – the introduction of a high-precision Coordinate Measuring Machine, which has been fully integrated into the machining and final inspection processes for turret mold bores. For commercial confidentiality reasons, this investment was not disclosed at the time. The turret is the core component of any tablet press, housing the upper punch, lower punch, and die. The three-dimensional positional accuracy, diameter tolerance, roundness, and perpendicularity of its boreholes directly determine punch alignment, motion stability, and ultimately, tablet weight uniformity and hardness consistency. Even micron-level deviations can be magnified during high-speed operation, leading to abnormal tool wear, increased vibration, and even batch-wide product rejection.
The introduction of the CMM has given us micron-level three-dimensional inspection capabilities. Unlike conventional gauges, the CMM performs full-contour scanning and digital modeling of each borehole, automatically generating detailed reports covering positional deviation, coaxiality, perpendicularity, and other critical parameters. This technological upgrade, however, comes with a hidden cost: with significantly tighter inspection criteria, the rejection rate during machining has increased substantially. Components that might have passed traditional checks are now strictly eliminated, resulting in a lower overall yield and a higher per-unit manufacturing cost.
Our management team firmly believes that this is a necessary cost for quality – not a loss of efficiency. Every rejected part identified by the CMM represents a potential machine that will never underperform in the field.
